The Unique Student Identifier (USI) – Your personal training record

BITA requests that you supply your USI number upon enrolment to access any previous accredited training you may have completed. This article explains what a USI is, how to get it, and why it is so important.

What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your individual education number for life. It is provided by the Australian Government and is a requirement for all students attending TAFE, university, or any other nationally recognised training organisation. A USI keeps track of any vocational education and training (VET) undertaken in Australia.

USI Number

What is a USI number used for?

The USI number allows you to access and keep track of your Vocational Education and Training results all in the one place. A USI transcript shows what RTO delivered the training, start and finish dates, and funding details. Having all this information in the one place makes it easier when applying for credit transfers and removes the risk of lost credentials, resulting in unnecessary retraining.

How do I get a USI?

A USI is obtained from the Australian Government by following the step-by-step instructions below. You will need a form of identity such as Drivers Licence, Medicare Card, Passport, Birth Certificate, ImmiCard, Centrelink Concession Card, or Aviation-Maritime Security ID Card.

  1. Visit the USI website.
  2. Accept the terms and conditions and click “NEXT”.
  3. Click on the “CREATE USI” button.
  4. Choose yes or no for the option of “Are you applying for a USI on behalf of another person?” If you answered yes, you would need to provide your contact details and click on “NEXT”.
  5. Select the document type for your evidence of identity and complete the details.
  6. Fill in your personal details or person you are completing the application for details and click on “NEXT”.
  7. Fill in your contact details and postal address and click on “NEXT”.
  8. Check the details are all correct and click on “CONFRM IDENTITY”. You will then see your USI.
  9. You will receive an email asking you to activate your USI. Click on the link in the email and fill out the form to set your password and create your security questions. This will activate your USI and you can.
